Strange Attractors is an addictive game built around the concept of using only a single to control a space ship. Your ship gets bounced, flung, and warped around levels, with the only control being the gravity drive. Hit the space bar, and you can sling shot around (or bounce of) the large metal spheres. The size of the spheres affects how hard they pull, and how much they move when you hit them.

You might as well give it a go, the controls don;t take too long to learn ;)

As RjY points out it's anoying when you realise that your digital camera has the wrong date on it. All your photo's have the wong created date on them.
(It's anoying when equipment switches and DST hasn't happened but that's another story)

This happened to me this weekend. When trying to rename camera files from DSCF to yymmdd I spotted that the new years eve photo's were being named 060104. I found a couple of windows programs that would let you adjust file attributes one at a time, or a whole folder in batch, but only to a set date.

Finally I found THE renamer. It not only batch renames files for me (I used to use this renamer ), but will adjust creation date, by a given number of seconds, minuets, hours, days, months, or years.

Very useful.

Better still is this massive list of physics flash animations. These are brilliant. There's far too many to talk about invidual ones. Muck around with the chaos ones for much prettyness. Better still they're available under a CC liscence, so you can take copies of them.

It's a nice little fairy tale.

I'm going to have throw my hat in with the many bloggers out there recommending you go see Serenity before it leaves the cinema.
It doesn't look like it's going to be there long.
It's a sci fi western sort of thing by Josh Whedon (creator of Buffy and Angel) based on a cancelled TV series called firefly.
Don't worry if you haven't seen Firefly, Serenity more than stands up on it's own (although it apparently is even better if you've seen the series).
The thing that impressed me most had to be the pacing. It's a rare movie where my mind doesn't wander once. I was engrossed the whole was through.

I do like Hugh's Google Parodies.

When they recenlty announced another program you can download for free, Hugh announced Google Hello World.

While they were adding more and more specialised functions, hugh announced Google Google. A service for finding which Google service you need.

The scary thing is how many of the "new projects" mentioned in that one, seem to be comming true.

The closest I could find was Google Fried Chicken, but surely the peanut butter can't be far behind.

Reading time.

The Fifth Gift. A Sci-Fi story that, to quote one of the comments, "sort of reminds me of a certain genre of 50's-era SF -- not the greatest writing in the world, to be sure, but engaging."
To be fair, I hate writing that's too pretentious, and love engaging short stories, so I really liked this story.
Ooh, he's stuck a novel online too. Neat.

Far from being designed to kill people and leave the buildings intact for the Americans; it was designed to kill soldiers in a military base, without causing fallout, or killing those near the blast zone, or ruining civilian infrastructre (causing people to be forced to drink out of sewers).

I realised yesterday that I never put up links to the software I use to create my photo album I'm deliberately not posting a link to it, to protect the innocent (and me).

I have written a file renamer for photos, but I started to tinker with it. Thinking about making it more flexible. Before I started I looked to see if any else had and
this file renamer is pretty damn flexible. In advanced mode it's got the most complicated UI I've seen, but it's still quite intuitive.

J Album is a Java Photo Album maker. The main reason I chose it is because I need the site to be just plain static HTML pages, with no database.
That doesn't do it justice. It's incredibly versatile. Even if I move to a dynamic album, I'll probably still use JAlbum to rotate the originals (without changing the last modified date), and create the scaled originals (with watermarks).
You can choose whether to link to the originals, copies of the originals, or scaled copies. That's if you want thumbnails. The templating is incredible rich, and it comes with several examples. You can choose the size and quality of any of the images. If you're scanning subdirectories for photos, you can tell it to ignore some. You can write comments for each picture.
Best of all it's cross platform, and free.

Then I SFTP upload it all to ... Oops nearly linked it there. :)

The end to the old joke "I'd install linux, but it doesn't run under Windows".
Well now it does, via Cooperative Linux.
Apparently this isn't like emulating an OS in a virtual machine (which is slow), but Linux and Windows both share access to resources.
The wikipedia article on CoLinux does a better job than I could, so I'll leave it there.

Seriously give it a try first. There's less objects, and more of a story, it's much easier.

It's been a while since I read Groklaw.
It's a quite low volume site, with only a couple of posts a day so it's only now that I realise quite how many differnt things I read this site for.

It's pretty much the best source for tracking what's going on with SCO's Microsoft's litigation. Which is what it is best known for, but that's not all there is too it.

It often talks about other lawsuits, particularly if they're about Free Softwere, or particulary silly.

It's diedicatited to Anti-FUD. Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, being an evil marketing tool e.g. "I wouldn'y use Linux, they might get sued for patents soon." And Microsft never gets sued.

It often also talks about nifty new things in the Open Source world.

Thursday's Webcomic

Dave Davenport is occasionally appalled at some of the things he has to do, but what geek could resist working on an orbiting death ray?
Mell Kelly is homocidal, and very promising, evil intern. She's only taking law, so she can run for President one day.
Helen Narbonic is the clone of her mother, Helen. She enjoys genetic manipulation, and flirting with her rival Madblood.

Snarky raves about it all the time. It really is very funny, with a great plot.
I never started reading it as the archives are on Modern Tales, and I didn't want to pay, unless I liked it. However Narbonic is up for an award at the moment and the whole archives are free untill Sunday, so have a quick read.
